Motueka Area Guide
The town of Motueka lies in the centre of a rich horticultural area on the western side of Tasman Bay, the surrounding countryside planted in apple orchards, vineyards and hop fields. The town's population of farmers, fishermen and alternative lifestylers swells with seasonal workers during fruit picking season. The town also has a flourishing arts and crafts community, with many contemporary artists exhibiting in small galleries just off state highway 60 between Richmond and Motueka.
In the centre of town, the Motueka District Museum provides a look over the horticultural and cultural history of the area. To explore the town's waterfront, head down Old Wharf Road to the Motueka Quay, the jetty and store houses all that remains of this once bustling port. In spring and summer swim in the historic Motueka Salt Water Baths, and walk along the Motueka Sandspit to see visiting migratory godwits overwintering in New Zealand before beginning their long journey back to their nesting grounds in the Arctic Circle.
Motueka is a good base for planning hiking or kayaking adventures into the Abel Tasman National Park, 18 kilometres to the north, with the Visitor Centre providing information and booking services.
