Tutukaka Area Guide

Tutukaka is the unofficial gateway to one of the world's great diving locations: the Poor Knights Islands marine reserve, just a few kms off the coast. The islands themselves are off limits to visitors, but the underwater delights include a range of caves, pinnacles and reefs, all teeming with marine life.

Nor does the diving stop there. Two naval vessels were purposely sunk either side of Tutukaka Heads to offer a more manmade marine experience.

Above the water, Tutukaka specializes in fishing and boat charters. Together with diving, these bring in plenty of visitors to the area, and appropriate facilities have sprung up as a result. Accommodation runs from a hotel and resort complex through self-catering cabins, homes and apartments, as well as B&B and camping.

Those tired of fish can take coastal or bush walks or visit a local winery or alpaca farm.

Gift shop and art gallery featuring jewelery, textiles, handicrafts, paintings and more. The store also has Internet and PC facilities, and acts as a booking agent for accommodation, sailing and fishing charters and other tours.
