Kaitaia Area Guide
Kaitaia acts as the urban centre for the far north of New Zealand. It's not a conventional tourist attraction in itself, when compared to the beaches and landscapes of surrounding locations. But it does provide a base for exploring Ninety Mile Beach, Cape Reinga and other nearby areas, often acting as a starting point for coach tours around the Aupouri Peninsula.
Visitors to the town can, however, enjoy such treats as the regional museum, arts and crafts shops and galleries, and a Maori craft and culture centre.
Kaitaia's most important role, perhaps, is as a central reservoir of visitor amenities, including shops, cafes, restaurants, a hospital, airport, sports centre, library and other facilities not found in the smaller towns and villages that make up the rest of this northernmost part of New Zealand.
